acrylic pottery stamp

Posted on August 8, 2022 by szmoon

Last tuesday evening, I finally had some energy to get up and craft! I decided to finally make a name stamp for clay, since I’d be going to my first pottery class the following evening and might need to mark my pieces (the teacher ended up scrapping all of our clay for reclaim haha, since they we were mainly learning throwing techniques).

I originally got the idea to engrave an acrylic stamp from my dad, who made one years ago to sign his work created in sculpture class. What’s really funny is that when I was searching the glowforge forums for inspiration for how to construct my clay stamp, the first/only relevant post was this one – by my dad! Below is a snippet from our group chat with my mom. 😂

Some other inspirations for finally doing this project were seeing this lovely stamp by @byalicelee, and getting served this add for custom stamps on instagram (lol).

I decided to go ahead and digitize the name stamp my parents had carved for me in Taiwan when I was a kid – a name seal is made for signing art, so it seemed like the right choice! 🙂

The lasercut parts were pretty simple, although I did a few test engraves to get the design as deep as I wanted. The final stamp portion was made from 1/4″ clear acrylic, engraved using the Thick Clear Acrylic, Deep Engrave setting, but with the speed brought down to 600. The handle was cut from some scrap 1/8″ ColorHues acrylic I had laying around. All I had to do after cutting was glue the pieces together! 🙂

I’m really happy with how it turned out! This stamp was 0.75″ wide, but in the future, I’d like to see if I can scale it down so I have more size options for smaller ceramic pieces. ♡
