resin pattern weight

Posted on March 3, 2022March 4, 2022 by szmoon

After seeing the pattern weights that Martha of Buried Diamond makes and uses, I haven’t been able to shake the idea of making some of my own. Hers are so colorful and gorgeous, and just looking at the photos I can tell that they’re objects of love and joy (does that sound cheesy?). They just seemed like the perfect way to make those small trinkets I’ve collected, but never found a proper way to display, into something practical (here’s an instagram post that shows more of her collection – my favorite is the one with the little watercolor set ♡).

For the past couple of years, I’ve been trying to be very careful about not starting too many new hobbies. Getting into resin just to make pattern weights seemed like something I couldn’t justify for long while. But this christmas I ended up getting a small UV lamp meant for gel nail polish in a white elephant exchange, and after a friend mentioned that it could be used for resin projects, I had my excuse. 😂 I ended up getting some started supplies to make resin keycaps, and also grabbed a sphere mold to finally make my first pattern weight.

I’d already known what my first pattern weight was going to be for awhile. My friend Michelle gave me this super cute Sailor Saturn drink marker years ago, and although I displayed it on a little shelf for awhile, it’s been sitting in a box longer. I knew a pattern weight was the perfect way to be able to see and enjoy this little figurine much more often. 🙂 (I’ve found that resin is also a great way to use the glitter and sequins I’ve accumulated over the years haha.)

After I demolded the paperweight and let it sit in the sun for a day, I sanded the bottom flat and glued some felt on so it’d be gentler on pattern tissue.

I’m so happy with how this first one turned out! It makes cutting out patterns just a little bit more special. ♡ I already know what my next pattern weight is going to be!
