LED knot ornament

Posted on August 23, 2021 by szmoon

Last week I picked up some things I haven’t worked with in a long while – LEDs and soft circuits. After I was done working for the day, I sketched out a quick diagram of a light-up Chinese knot ornament:

I knew that the knot size of the previous ornament I made wouldn’t be big enough to hide the battery holder, so I decided to try a slightly bigger version of the same knot.

The resulting knot was still a bit too small – it could barely cover the battery, so making a custom battery holder with felt and conductive thread wasn’t really an option either:

I decided to make something quick out of felt to go under the knot, that could easily cover the coin cell battery holder (of course it ended up being another floppy disk haha).

The floppy disk wasn’t perfect, but I was happy enough with it!

After that, I bent the legs of the leds so that they would have loops to sew through with the conductive thread. I made sure to mark the positive ends with pink sharpie so that I wouldn’t lose track of things.

And here is the finished circuit! Not perfect, but I was pretty happy with this overall as a weeknight project. ♡
